On the 21st of January, I attended the Bridge to Success Conference, hosted at the National Arts Centre and organized by the Telfer Finance Society in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Consulting Association (UOCA) and the Telfer Business Technology Association (BTA).

The event consisted of four main components: workshops, cocktail networking, mock interviews, and concluded with a three-course dinner.

I was thoroughly impressed from the moment I registered. With its diverse academic landscape, students at the Telfer School of Management are keen to connect with industry professionals from various sectors such as finance, consulting, and technology. The event the Telfer Finance Society organized was exceptional in every aspect. It successfully catered to a wide spectrum of students and stood out due to its high-quality execution and meticulous organization.

Workshops

The day commenced with the introduction of three engaging workshops, each thoughtfully designed to cater to the varied interests of the attendees.

The first session, titled 'Consulting Catalysts,' was conducted by the executive members of the uOttawa Consulting Association. This session was crafted to equip participants with the foundational skills necessary for tackling case studies in consulting interviews. Utilizing the well-regarded 'profitability framework,' the executive team provided a strategic approach to these case discussions, which are essential for any novice in the field.

The clarity of the presentation was noteworthy, as it was incredibly easy for beginners to understand. As someone seasoned in these interviews, I appreciated how concise and beginner-friendly their presentation was. Participants left feeling more self-assured and better prepared for upcoming interviews.

The second workshop featured Dale Kehler, an IBM Associate Partner, who enlightened participants on the ethics of emerging artificial intelligence. This event, organized by the Business Technology Association, attracted a keen audience interested in this emerging subject. The feedback from the session has been universally positive.

Finally, the 'Case Cracking' workshop presented by CPA Ontario in partnership with the Telfer Finance Society was designed to impart critical strategies in case analysis. The workshop covered analytical techniques, tools, and starting points essential for reaching a sound solution to case examinations. This session significantly bolstered the students' confidence, interview readiness, and professional growth.

Networking

The second portion of the event kicked off with a vibrant cocktail networking session. The Telfer Finance Society truly outdid itself by offering a superb networking environment complemented by an assortment of snacks and beverages.

What made this session extraordinary was the impressive array of companies in attendance, including representatives from TD Bank, Welch Capital Partners, Sampford Advisors, CPA Ontario, BDO, Accenture, and many others. There was something for everyone, regardless of their interests, skills, or career goals.

As my professional interests skew towards the consulting and technology sectors, I was thrilled to see companies like IBM, EY, and NIEWE Consulting among the participants. Their presence provided the perfect opportunity for meaningful dialogue and the forging of new connections.

It wasn’t just me who was captivated by the event; the sight of so many engaged students actively introducing themselves to professionals was truly inspiring. It reflected the clubs’ strategic planning and their success in ensuring the event was beneficial for all attendees.

Mock Interviews

Arguably the best part of the day.

The current job market is challenging for those seeking to gain interview experience. With countless qualified applicants vying for a mere handful of internship slots, the odds of advancing through the selection process are slim without solid networking or connections.

This is precisely the hurdle that the Bridge to Success Conference had cleared. Every participant was guaranteed two interviews in their preferred industry. Aspiring consultants had the opportunity to be interviewed by consulting firms, and the same level of access was afforded to other industry sectors.

This provided students with an exceptional opportunity to practice their interview skills with actual professionals and, impressively, the possibility of receiving a job offer following a successful interview. Beyond the learning experience, the additional chance of employment underscores the event's value.

On a personal note, I interviewed with NIEWE and Deloitte. Although my goal wasn't to secure a job, my curiosity was piqued by the distinct interviewing styles of various consulting firms and how they set themselves apart.

This aspect of the event directly addressed a significant issue: the struggle students face in gaining practical interview experience and finding career advancement opportunities. It stood out as a particularly noteworthy feature of the event.

Dinner

After an engaging day filled with conversation and an immense amount of water consumed, the Telfer Finance Society presented a three-course dinner accompanied by a jazz performance from Jay's Quartet, comprising of talented Telfer students.

A delectable three-course dinner and some nice jazz to end the night; a great conclusion to the amazing event that the Bridge to Success Conference was.

Final Reflections

Amazing day, an amazing event.

The logistics were seamless, with any issues promptly addressed by the organizing teams.

It was an inclusive experience; every student who attended found immense value in the event.

The food was good, and the music was excellent.

This event is sure to remain a warm memory for every attendee.

I am looking forward to seeing how this event further innovates its impact next year.
